ARCHEOLOGICAL FIELDWORK AND TRIPS IN BULGARIA AND GREECE

Bulgaria is a small country in East Europe, neighbouring Greece, Turkey, Macedonia, Serbia and Romania. This region is known to be one of the ancient centers of human civilization and Bulgaria, as a part of it, has much to offer to those who are interested in history and archaeology. There have been many great cultures that inhabited these lands - starting back in prehistoric times when Bulgaria's east coasts were home of the civilization that first produced golden items in the human history, the Thracian kingdoms, the Greek colonies, the Celtic countries, the Roman and Byzantine empires, Bulgarian kingdoms, the Ottoman empire, etc.

Aiming to promote Bulgaria as one of the most attractive countries in the field of archaeology, we offer field work opportunities all over the country. Most of the sites open for field work date back to Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine times. Hands-on experience is a touch with real life of ancient civilizations and culture and a great impetus to discover the origin of nowadays. The boost of tourism emphasizes another aspect of the archaeology i.e. to reveal cultures of ancient epochs, artifacts, lifestyles.

For season 2008 we would like to present two archaeology fieldwork programs - the first takes you to an Early Christian Basilica in Sandanski, Southwest Bulgaria and the second, to digging at the Roman baths in the town of Hisar combined with research of a newly found Thracian emporion and a neighbouring sanctuary.
